Ancient Vadic writings describe 6 Hatha Yoga Techniques as ‘Shatkarmas’ to purify body and mind. Dhauti, Basti, Neti, Nauli, “Tratak” and Kapalbhati are 6 shatkarmas.
“Tratak is the process of concentrating vision on any object like Point, Temple peak, Deepak Flame, Mirror, Sun, Moon etc.”
Along with Mental peace and relaxation, Tratak Meditation when practiced in proper guidance and technique can also act as a simple and effective method of accessing Inner World and Reveal the secrets of Existence and Consciousness.

Tratak meditation is a powerful practice that helps you control your thoughts by focusing your attention on a single point of focus, such as a candle flame. This concentration practice enhances mindfulness and awareness, helping you to clear mental clutter and calm the mind. By repeatedly focusing on the object, it trains the mind to stay present and reduces distractions, making it easier to control wandering thoughts and achieve a state of mental clarity and peace.
Tratak meditation helps you enter deep meditation by encouraging intense focus on a single object, like a candle flame. This concentrated attention calms the mind and reduces distractions, allowing you to enter a state of deep relaxation and stillness. As your focus sharpens, your mind moves beyond surface-level thoughts, leading to profound inner peace and heightened awareness. This deep meditative state promotes mental clarity and spiritual growth.
Suraksha Kavach, or "protective shield," is a concept in tratak meditation where the practitioner visualizes a protective energy surrounding them. By focusing on a point (like a candle flame) and deepening concentration, the practitioner can mentally create a shield of light or energy that protects against negative influences, stress, or harmful thoughts. This visualization helps to strengthen the mind's resilience, promoting a sense of safety, mental clarity, and emotional balance. It’s believed to offer both spiritual and physical protection.

Shambhavi Sadhana Siddhi is a spiritual practice that aims to awaken inner energies and enhance mental clarity and focus. When combined with Tratak meditation, which involves focusing intensely on a single point, such as a candle flame or a symbol, it helps achieve a deeper state of concentration. Through this practice, one cultivates heightened awareness and balances the body’s energies, leading to a sense of calm, mental sharpness, and spiritual growth. The “Siddhi” in this context signifies the mastery or fulfillment achieved through consistent practice.
In Nadi Shodhan Pranayama, the purification of nadis (subtle energy channels) plays a crucial role in balancing the body’s pranic (life force) flow. The three main nadis involved are:
Ida Nadi – Associated with the left nostril, it represents lunar energy (Chandra), cooling, calming, and feminine qualities. It governs the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and mental peace.
Pingala Nadi – Associated with the right nostril, it represents solar energy (Surya), warmth, activeness, and masculine qualities. It controls the sympathetic nervous system, boosting energy, focus, and metabolism.
Sushumna Nadi – The central energy channel, running along the spine, which remains dormant until Ida and Pingala are balanced. It is responsible for spiritual awakening and enlightenment, leading to higher states of consciousness when activated.
Third Eye Activation through Tratak meditation involves focusing on a specific point, usually the space between the eyebrows, to stimulate the pineal gland and enhance intuition, perception, and spiritual awareness. By concentrating on a candle flame or another object during Tratak, the practitioner directs energy to the ajna chakra (Third Eye), facilitating mental clarity, deeper insight, and a heightened connection to higher consciousness. Regular practice can lead to improved focus, greater inner peace, and the development of psychic abilities.
In Yoga, Bandhas are energy locks that help control and direct prana (life force) within the body. There are four main types:
Mula Bandha (Root Lock) – Engages the perineum and pelvic floor muscles, stimulating the Muladhara Chakra. It enhances stability, improves digestion, and awakens spiritual energy.
Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock) – Involves pulling the abdomen inward and upward, stimulating the Manipura Chakra. It strengthens the diaphragm, massages internal organs, and boosts energy flow.
Jalandhara Bandha (Throat Lock) – Performed by tucking the chin to the chest, compressing the throat region. It stimulates the Vishuddha Chakra, regulates thyroid function, and controls blood circulation to the brain.
Maha Bandha (Great Lock) – A combination of all three bandhas, practiced together for deep energy control, enhanced concentration, and spiritual awakening.
Regular practice of bandhas improves pranic flow, strengthens the body, and deepens meditation.
Shambhavi Mudra – Gazing at the space between the eyebrows (Third Eye) to stimulate intuition and spiritual awakening.
Nasikagra Drishti – Focusing on the tip of the nose to develop concentration and mental steadiness.
Tratak – Fixing the gaze on an external object, such as a candle flame or a point, to strengthen willpower and improve inner vision.
Sakshi Bhava (Witnessing Attitude) – Observing thoughts and emotions without attachment or judgment.
Ekagrata (One-Pointed Focus) – Keeping the mind centered on a single mantra, breath, or thought for deep concentration.
Tratak means continuously gazing. Tratak is a powerful meditation technique that works on all aspects of life and prepares for deeper meditations.
Anyone of any age can do Tratak Kriya except people who recently had Eye surgery/operation.
